On September 24, 1971, Hotel Okura Amsterdam officially opened its doors, a landmark moment in our history. For 54 years, we have had the honour of being a bridge between two cultures, seamlessly blending the art of traditional Japanese hospitality that goes beyond simple service, known as Omotenashi, with the sophistication of modern Western luxury.
The story began with a vision to bring authentic Japanese hospitality to Europe. This ambition was built on trust and collaboration: the founders cultivated strong relationships with local partners, artisans, and suppliers, ensuring every detail reflected both Japanese artistry and Dutch craftsmanship. These connections laid the foundation for a hotel that would stand out not only for luxury but for genuine cultural exchange.
We were the first hotel in Europe to introduce authentic Japanese fine dining, with Yamazato becoming the first Japanese restaurant in the world to earn a Michelin star. The success continued with Ciel Bleu, our two-Michelin-star restaurant on the 23rd floor, which has captivated guests for decades with its breathtaking views and exquisite cuisine.

With this achievement, Chef Arjan officially becomes the 154th Master Chef in the Netherlands. His success marks another proud moment for Ciel Bleu, which now joins the select group of only 11 restaurants in the country where two or more SVH Masters work together. Since 2010, our SVH Wine Master Noël Vanwittenbergh has represented excellence in wine and hospitality at Ciel Bleu.
The SVH Master title is the highest distinction in the Dutch hospitality industry, symbolising exceptional professional competence and dedication. Since the very first SVH Master Chef graduated in 1980, SVH Masters have been ambassadors of the profession, inspiring future generations to pursue careers in hospitality.
