The adventures of a concierge

They know all ins and outs of the city, from the largest concerts to that one specific shop in that small alley no one ever heard about. They practically hold the keys to the city and are able to give you directions no matter where you are going. Who they are? That’s easy… They are the hotels’ concierges! Curious what kind of situations occur at the desk of the concierge? Same here!

If you’re not familiar with the profession of the hotel concierge, here is the definition that best describes it: a concierge is someone who can arrange almost everything to make your stay as pleasant as possible. On a daily basis, the concierges provide guests with touristic information, advise about restaurants and make reservations, organize transfers by limousine, shuttle bus or boat and they assist with tickets for public transport, museums, concerts, you name it. In addition to these daily tasks, they also face unexpected challenges.

Unexpected challenges
Martijn Ottenhoff, Head Concierge at Hotel Okura Amsterdam explains: “Not a single day is ever the same. When I start my shift, it might look like a quiet day at first sight. But then the phone rings and all of a sudden a challenging quest can appear. Guests have all kinds of questions; the most memorable question would be from a guest who asked assistance in buying a cow! Direct contact with guests and being able to assist with all kinds of challenges makes my job very rewarding. All in all, I think I have the best job in the world!”
