
On the third Sunday in October, the annual Amsterdam Marathon takes place. On Sunday October 16th, the 36th edition of the event will be held. Besides the marathon, there is also a mini marathon, half a marathon and there are two other runs.
The length of a marathon is 42.195 km. After the marathon of Rotterdam, the Amsterdam Marathon is the largest marathon event in the Netherlands. The first marathon ever was run during the 1928 Olympics; it took a Frenchman 2 hours and 35 minutes to finish. Today it takes about 2 hours and 6 minutes.
The Amsterdam Marathon is known as a fast track because it is a very flat track. The route also leads through beautiful and often historic places, so the city of Amsterdam is in the spotlights worldwide. The public has free access to the Olympic Stadion during the Amsterdam Marathon, where entertainment is provided during the whole day. Along the track many Amsterdam citizens encourage the runners.
