Hotel Okura Amsterdam wants to do what it can to help tackle social issues.
We do this by supporting local initiatives and national organisations both financially and with knowledge and materials. The projects and organisations we support are described below.
The Emma Kinderziekenhuis Academic Children’s Hospital (AMC) is the main beneficiary of the ongoing support provided by Hotel Okura Amsterdam. As well as providing annual financial support, Hotel Okura Amsterdam also arranges for its chefs to visit the hospital on a regular basis to stage gourmet evenings for the children with Okura supplying all necessary ingredients. Okura has also created an Okura Suite and a teen kitchen at the Emma Kinderziekenhuis.
The Okura Suite is an important project at the Emma Kinderziekenhuis AMC. In recent years the hospital has been experimenting with providing a family suite of rooms. This makes it possible for a small family to stay at the hospital while one of the children is under treatment. The ability to be together, have breakfast together, spend the night together, and to get through the illness together has proved to be a tremendous source of support. In light of this positive experience we are now endeavouring to create a small maisonette at the Emma Kinderziekenhuis.
On 28 February 2004 Hotel Okura Amsterdam hosted a large international charity dinner for the Emma Kinderziekenhuis AMC in Amsterdam in association with a number of sponsors. The proceeds were used to create an Okura Suite at the children’s hospital. The project follows on from a campaign conducted in 1998, when Okura Hotel Amsterdam donated a sum of NLG 130,350 to the children’s hospital so it could build a teen kitchen. Thanks to the generous support of a large number of sponsors, companies and private individuals, the young patients can now cook to their heart’s content, celebrate their birthday with friends or simply watch a video together. In other words, the children now have a place where they feel at home.
The Streetcornerwork Foundation helps homeless youths and young addicts in Amsterdam Zuid. Hotel Okura Amsterdam lends a hand by setting up work projects for young people.
Skibb works to improve the relationship between schools and businesses in Amsterdam Oud Zuid. Hotel Okura Amsterdam is keen to support this initiative and is visited by groups of children from primary schools in the immediate vicinity of Hotel Okura Amsterdam. The children make ice cream with our Executive Chefs or engage in other enjoyable activities. This gives the children an impression what it is like to work in a large hotel.
Okura Green Committee
In 2008 Hotel Okura Amsterdam set up a Green Committee as part of its endeavour to increase its commitment to society. The Okura Green Committee ensures that all of our work processes are as eco-friendly as possible.
Laat een Container Varen Foundation
Hotel Okura Amsterdam donates its old furniture to the Laat een Container Varen Foundation which helps furnish relief centres, elderly care homes and hospital accommodation in Surinam. The furniture donated by Hotel Okura Amsterdam is ideal for this purpose.
Fish & Season
Fish & Season is an initiative by our fish supplier Jan van As. Our Executive Chef and Restaurant Manager Onno Kokmeijer is an Ambassador of this project. The Fish & Season principle is “eat fish obtained from sustainable sources and refrain from eating it during the breeding season”. All of the restaurants at Hotel Okura Amsterdam work in accordance with this principle in order to promote sustainable fishing. Together with Jan van As, Hotel Okura Amsterdam constantly endeavours to draw attention to this initiative in order to raise awareness.
We donate our empty printer cartridges to the AAP Foundation — a rescue centre for exotic animals. The AAP Foundation uses the money it obtains for the printer cartridges to cover a large proportion of the cost of caring for the animals. As well as helping to protect the environment, this also helps the AAP Foundation protect animals.
